What is Paint Correction?
You may have heard of terms such as compounding, buffing, polishing, a single stage or a multi-stage correction and thought what does all of this mean? Think of it like this. When you sand a wood table for example, you begin with sandpaper that has a larger grit. This will sand down the surface quicker but leave behind new scratches from your sandpaper. Then you move to a sandpaper with a finer grit to remove those scratches, an even finer grit to remove those, and so on until you achieve a smooth surface with no visible scratches. Correcting paint follows the process.
So what do some of these terms mean?
Buff/buffing: using a machine to wax, polish or compound a vehicle’s paint
Compound: A liquid with heavy grit to quickly remove deeper scratches & swirls
Polish: A liquid with a fine grit to refine the surface of lighter scratches, swirls & compound marks
Single Stage: just polish (fine grit) Multi Stage: polish & compound (fine & heavy grit)
One Step: a little of both at the same time (medium grit)
Assessment & Process
Before the magic begins, our expert technicians conduct a comprehensive assessment of your vehicle’s paint condition looking for any swirl marks, scratches and oxidation. Then we use a paint meter to gauge what results are obtainable with the amount of clear coat on your vehicle. Finally, we choose a combination of compounds, polishes, pads and machines to begin and complete the paint correction process.
Is there any special maintenance required?
You just had all this work done, make it last by opting to have your vehicle washed by a professional instead of running it through automatic car washes that reintroduce the scratching and swirling you just had removed. Because there is a limited amount of paint and clear coat on your vehicle, you can only correct the surface so many times. This is why a proper maintenance plan is foundational to the paint’s health and appearance.
